Roseville Eagle Scouts commended by Supervisors

Six young men from Placer County were honored Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors for having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable in The Boy Scouting program.

Present today in Board Chambers were five of the six Eagle Scouts:

Thomas Martin;
Jarrett McBride;
Arpan Rajan;
Nathan Woodruff; and
Trevor Fischer.

The sixth Eagle Scout, Luke Summer, was unable to attend, but will still receive a commendation from the board. All the Eagle Scouts are from Roseville's Troop 11.

"I want to commend six of our local Boy Scouts who have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout," said Supervisor Jack Duran, whose First District includes Roseville, in his comments to the Scouts.

Supervisor Kirk Uhler, who earned his Eagle Scout rank 29 years ago, welcomed the Scouts to the rank of Eagle. He told them that they would always be Eagle Scouts and that their journey was just beginning.

In another item that involved area youth, the Supervisors received a report from the Placer County Youth Commission. Three Commission members briefed the Board on the activities in the last year of the 18 Commission members and alternates activities in the past year. The Youth Commission, established by the Supervisors in 2009, is set up by the Board of Supervisors and contains high school-aged students who represent each supervisorial district.

The 2011-2012 Commissioners sponsored, and were key organizers, of "Celebrate Out Loud", a youth resource fair and expo of teen creativity in downtown Auburn. The Commission also reported on work they have done to combat underage drinking and substance abuse, including the Social Host ordinance, which assess a monetary fine on adults and parents who supply alcohol to minors. The Commission also paired with the Coalition for Placer Youth and Del Oro Fish Bowl forum. In a program with environmental benefits, the Commission worked on a plan where people can voluntarily opt out of receiving junk mail.

"This morning we are here to celebrate our youth," said Supervisor Jim Holmes who, with his District Aide Ruth Alves, worked closely with the Commission. "We really thank you for the work you've done."
