$17 Million Expansion at Rocklin based University

ROCKLIN, Calif. - William Jessup University, the Sacramento area's only residential four-year private university, recently unveiled a $17 million campus expansion that adds new dining, athletic and classroom facilities to accommodate a growing number of students.

This is the second major expansion since the university relocated to Rocklin in 2004. In the fall of 2009, William Jessup doubled its on-campus housing capacity by opening a state-of-the-art, 192-bed apartment building complex.

The latest expansion of the Christian university adds a full-feature dining facility with indoor and outdoor seating, an intercollegiate gymnasium, classrooms, and music practice rooms. The new, 54,000-square-foot facilities will be fully operational when an expected record number of more than 1,000 students return to campus later this month.

"This expansion allows us to better serve students today and also prepares us for continued increases in our enrollment," said Dr. John Jackson, President of William Jessup University. "We are very thankful for those who have made this expansion possible through their generosity and partnership as we teach and see the transformation of our students."

 The new expansion includes:

    * A 19,400 square-foot dining facility with open-style kitchen and specialty eatery areas that focus on providing convenient, fast fresh food. The dining facility will open to students on August 29, the first day of classes.
    * A 1,018-seat gymnasium for basketball and volleyball that also features athletic offices and a training room.
    * Six classrooms, totaling 6,291 square feet.
    * 11 music practice rooms with studio pianos, including two larger practice rooms with concert grand pianos, and teaching studios with grand pianos.

The uniquely designed dining facility is highlighted by an exhibition kitchen where diners receive an interactive experience with the open-style setting as they watch their food being prepared. The area will include a late-night, gas-fired pizza oven, fresh bakery, Coffee/Espresso bar, and private dining rooms.

The dining facility and the coffee bar, formerly known as Crossroads Café and the Shack, will also be open to the public, starting August 29. Hours of operation Monday through Friday are: Breakfast: 7:30-9:30 a.m.; Lunch 11-1 p.m.; and Dinner 5-7 p.m. Weekend hours include a brunch from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and dinner from 5-7 p.m.

The expansive Warrior Arena gymnasium features four team rooms and showers, five athletic staff offices, a training/therapy room with state-of-the-art hydrotherapy equipment, laundry facility, and video recording booth located in the upper mezzanine for video playback purposes to aid coaches and players.

"All the athletes and coaches at William Jessup will benefit tremendously from our new, expansive facilities," said Farnum Smith, the Athletic Director at William Jessup. "This is a first-class facility that we are very proud to call home. It's going to be a really exciting, electric atmosphere when our volleyball and basketball teams play in our new gym this season. It's something the athletes, coaches, and our loyal fans will all enjoy."

Founded in 1939 and located on 128 acres in Rocklin, William Jessup University is the only WASC-accredited private four-year residential university to have its main campus located in the greater Sacramento area.

The expansion ceremony featured live music and scrimmaging by William Jessup volleyball and basketball players in the new gymnasium.

The event was attended by many local government and civic leaders, including Congressman Dan Lungren and Tom McClintock, Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, Placer County Supervisor Jim Holmes, Rocklin Mayor Brett Storey, and members of the Rocklin City Council. Also in attendance were William Jessup student leaders, former WJU President Bryce Jessup, numerous elected officials, plus community and business leaders.

Reeve-Knight Construction Inc. was the general contractor for the expansion project and the Taylor Group served as the project architect. The two companies also collaborated on the award-winning apartment building complex. The design group also included Jim Webb and his team at Webb Design, who focused on the kitchen and the café interior.

The Taylor Group's design of the student apartments earned the company an Award of Honor from the American Institute of Architects San Joaquin Chapter, based on excellence in design. The Taylor Group is credited with strategically preserving the original conversion of the Herman Miller Furniture factory, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, to the existing look of the William Jessup campus.

The university's re-use of the facility has won accolades for preserving the original design while creating a unique campus atmosphere. The project also resulted in a Sacramento Business Journal award for building design in 2005.
