American Fire Fully Contained
Updated Friday, August 30th- The American Fire outside Foresthill is fully contained with over 27,000 acres burned. 1,000 firefighters continues to tackle the blaze, which is down from a peak of over 1,800 personnel.
Crews continued work "mopping up", which consists of walking grid patterns inside the fire perimeter to detect and extinguish hot spots.
Additionally, isolated areas of unburned fuels in the interior of the fire were manually burned in order to reduce ground fuels. Throughout most of the fire area very little to no active fire was observed today. The north east and eastern flanks of the fire saw active fire behavior in the bottom of the canyons. Increased smoke was experienced today due to active fire inside of the fire lines. Tonight, fire engine crews will patrol and monitor the fire area.
Repair of areas affected by fire fighting activities will continue for some time in the American Fire area. This includes chipping material piled next to roads during fire line construction as well as identifying needs to construct water control devices along fire lines throughout the fire area.
The Tahoe National Forest and the Incident Management Team appreciate visitors continuing to comply with area and road closures. These closures are in place to protect visitors and fire fighters. The roads and areas that have been closed are unsafe due to fire-weakened, burned trees that pose a risk of falling, as well as frequently heavy smoke making visibility extremely poor. These areas and roads will continue to be re-evaluated and will be re-opened as soon as possible.
