Rocklin Sesquicentennial Lecture at Old St. Mary's Chapel
Abraham Lincoln was re-elected to the presidency as the Civil War raged on. The American Red Cross was founded. The population of the United States was slightly north of 30 million. The year was 1864.
It was also the year that the Central Pacific Railroad established Rocklin as a passenger stop. In 1864, Rocklin began supplying granite for the eastbound construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. So began the ascent of this small northern California countryside community with a history that continues to define its direction in the early 21st century.
In 2014, Rocklin celebrates its Sesquicentennial. Sesquicentennial is a tongue twister's way of saying Happy 150th birthday. The town officially incorporated in 1893.
As Rocklin continues to morph and grow into a modern suburban city, the Rocklin Historical Society has helped lead the charge to preserve and honor the heritage of this northern California community that over 50,000 people now call home.
On January 26th, 2014 at 2:00pm, Old Saint Mary's Chapel on Front Street will host Sierra College Professor Dan DeFoe as he recounts and interprets Rocklin's early beginnings as well as the tragedy that rocked the community back on Rocklin's 50th anniversary in 1914.
A $10.00 admission donation will benefit the fund to rebuild Rocklin's original firehouse.
