Man Arrested Following Pursuit and Resisting Arrest
An Auburn transient landed in jail after fleeing from Placer County Sheriff's officials on a stolen motorcycle yesterday.
At 11:45 a.m. Monday, Daniel Joseph Hubanks, 33, was riding the dirt bike - without a helmet - when a deputy on foot near Chana High School on Richardson Drive yelled at him to stop. He failed to yield and deputies came to the area to search for him. An unmarked car with two sheriff's lieutenants and a captain happened to be in the area, and they joined the search. They spotted Hubanks riding through someone's yard. He got back on the roadway and at the same time the administrators turned on their lights and sirens to initiate a stop, the bike ran out of gas.
Hubanks dropped the bike and ran and the two lieutenants ran after him, while the captain manned the radio. Hubanks jumped in a drainage canal, then surrendered at gunpoint with the two lieutenants right behind him. He was booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of stealing a vehicle, possession of a large, concealed fixed-blade knife, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest. His bail is set at $130,000.
The bike, a 2005 Honda 450x, was returned to its owner.
