AUBURN, Calif. - Students at Placer Elementary School recerntly learned first-hand about how food and fiber gets from the farm to them.  The first "Ag Day" educational event was sponsored by the Placer County Farm Bureau, Echo Valley Ranch, and the Placer Resource Conservation District (RCD).

As they rotated between stations, the 450 Kindergarten through 8th grade students had the opportunity to touch and feed animals, learn how to rope, see an active bee hive, plant a marigold to take home, and learn why the Placer mandarin is so unique.

The event was held in conjunction with National Ag Week, a nationwide effort to teach students about their food, fiber, and environment.  This is the first year Ag Day was held in Placer County, and the hosting organizations hope to grow it to eventually include all schools in the county.

Each student received a PlacerGROWN bag with educational materials and take-home agricultural products such as honey, dried cranberries, walnuts, and a tree seedling.  Teachers at the school each received curriculum and classroom activity sets.  Many local and regional volunteers contributed by teaching the stations, donating materials and agricultural products, or otherwise helping out for the day.
