The Little Free Library That Could in Auburn

Auburn, CA -- Nearly 30 people gathered on a shady street in the City of Auburn last week to celebrate the Little Free Library of Distinction created by resident Terri Goodman.

This Little Free Library, christened "Marianne's Little Free Library" after Terri's dear friend Marianne, was given special recognition for its unique design, creative outreach efforts, and the enthusiasm of its steward. Retired teachers, Terri and Marianne taught in neighboring classrooms for nearly 20 years and formed a bond over their shared love of reading.

The highlight of the event was a reading of the final chapter of The Song of the Swallows by the Little Free Library's namesake, Marianne, who struggles with serious health issues as a result of Encephalitis.

"Given the struggles she faces with her illness, it was amazing that Marianne was able to read so beautifully from her favorite book and sing," said Mary George, Placer County's Director of Library Services. "It really goes to show just how transformative language and reading can be."

Serving as an extension of local libraries these "take a book, return a book" kiosks offer multiple benefits for those who visit them, including providing a variety of reading material, and acting as a distribution site for information about literacy programs for people of all ages. Stewards typically oversee the operation of Little Free Libraries, but the public is encouraged to informally borrow and donate books.

The event was also attended by several local leaders, including Auburn City Council member Mike Holmes, who performed the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Placer County District 5 Supervisor, Jennifer Montgomery, praised Terri Goodman for creating a place where neighbors can gather for the exchange of free ideas, knowledge and learning.

"Little Free Libraries are important contributors to our community fabric," Supervisor Montgomery said. "Our public libraries are often oversubscribed and underfunded and Little Free Libraries offer an elegant and timely solution in a public private partnership."

Placer County District 3 Supervisor, Jim Holmes, told the crowd he wished there was a Little Free Library in his own neighborhood.

"Little Free Libraries get neighbors together and talking, and they make it easy for people to stay interested in reading," Supervisor Holmes said. "Just the other night I was looking for a book to read. It would have been great to be able to run down the street to a Little Free Library, pick out a book, and leave one of mine for someone else to enjoy."
