Free Hazardous Waste Collection in Placer County

Placer County, CA -- Looking for a free and convenient way to dispose of hazardous wastes that are collecting around your house? 

Mark your calendars for June 14th and 28th as Placer County will host two, free 1-day drop-off events in Colfax & Foresthill, respectively.

Hazardous waste includes items like: paints, motor oil/filters, automotive fluids, cleaners, pesticides, vehicle and small household batteries, medications and sharps (syringes and lancets). These items should not be disposed of with regular garbage (see below for a more complete list). Placer County residents can dispose of all these items, for free, at the following locations:

  • Colfax - Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Colfax High School parking lot off of Ben Taylor Road.
  • Foresthill - Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Foresthill High School parking lot.

These two events are sponsored by Placer County, and RecologyAuburn Placer and are open to Placer County residents only, including those who live in its cities (I.D. required). Placer County businesses may also dispose of hazardous materials between 2:00-3:00 p.m. for a fee and with an appointment. Appointments can be made by calling (800) 207-8222 at least two days before the event.

Acceptable items include: unused medications (no controlled substances), sharp (syringes and lancets - properly stored in rigid plastic containers), used motor oil/filters, antifreeze, gasoline, vehicle and small household batteries, cleaners, paints, varnishes, solvents, other flammables, herbicides, pesticides, and compressed-gas cylinders (up to 5 gallons).

Unacceptable items include: ammunition/explosives, PCBs, medical waste (other than sharps and medications), electronic waste and radioactive materials. A complete list of acceptable items, transport tips and techniques, and maps to the events are available at www.placer.ca.gov/recycle

There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per vehicle. For more information on the events, call (530) 889-6846 or email recycle@placer.ca.gov

FREE Disposal is also available at the following locations:
Daily in Western Placer County - The Western Placer Waste Management Authority Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)facility is open every day, year round from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located on Athens Avenue, about 1.5 miles past the Thunder Valley Casino, just before Fiddyment Road.  For more information please call 916-543-3960 or visit http://www.wpwma.com/hhw.html
 
The Auburn, Foresthill, and Meadow Vista Transfer Stations accept some materials such as: batteries, fluorescent light tubes, and electronic waste at no charge from Placer County residents. The Auburn Transfer Station also accepts sharps, lead-acid batteries, five-gallon compressed gas cylinders, latex paints, used motor oil and oil filters at no charge from Placer County residents, for more information and facility hours please call 530-885-3735 or visit www.placer.ca.gov/recycle .

City of Colfax - Colfax collects oil and oil filters at its yard on the corner of Rising Sun and Ben Taylor roads.  The facility is open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.  There is a limit of 5 gallons or 50 pounds.  If you have questions, please call (530) 346-2313.
