Pandora and Spotify: The Winning Combo

We've yet to discover a singular online music delivery system that satisfies our never ending quest for music nirvana. The good news is that by combining our habits of Pandora and Spotify, we've gotten pretty darn close.

Pandora (Finding Great Music)

When it comes to discovering new music that you'll actually love, Pandora Radio slaughters the competition.

Online music services attempt to deliver music they think you will like based on your listening habits and a variety of other factors. Creating your own artist station and regularly utilizing Pandora's "Thumb's Up, Thumbs Down" feature over a period of time has proven to be exceptional.

In addition to playing favorite songs, Pandora consistently provides music that it "thinks" we'll like. Over 90% of the time, it delivers stellar results and vastly expands musical taste and listening habits.

Competiting online radio stations attempt similar approaches, but every one has left us uninspired and disappointed.

When it's time to discover great music (both old and new) Pandora is easily our top pick.

Spotify (On Demand)

While Pandora excels at expanding your music, the drawback is that you can't listen to the songs of your choice on demand.

Spotify kicks some serious butt here. Although lacking some very notable exceptions in their music catalog, there is enough music here for everyone.

Finding and playing songs on demand is about as simple as it gets. Creating extensive playlists is a breeze and great for parties. You'll even find countless great live musical performances. Grateful Dead fans, get ready to enjoy yourself.

So the next time you find yourself wanting to listen to some of your favorite songs on demand, Spotify faithfully delivers.

A Winning Combo

Recently, friends and relatives from around the country, traveled to California for a weeklong party we were throwing. Naturally, music was one of the important ingredients of our festivities.

During the planning process, we polled our guests on their musical tastes and built our week of playlists on Spotify from both our guest's favorite songs as well as tracks we "favorited" on Pandora.

Upgrading the services to premium versions allows you to bypass commercials and listen offline in case Internet access is problematic.

For several days, all of our guest had the opportunity to hear and share their favorite music along with all the other guests. Country, rock, flamenco, pop and everything in between was represented.

The technology of Spotify and Pandora fit the musical bill perfectly by allowing us to tailor everyone's musical preferences into one long musical celebration and winning combination.
