PCWA Confident of Adequate Water Supplies for 2014

AUBURN --  Customers of the Placer County Water Agency are saving water and helping the county get through the worst drought Northern California has faced in a generation, it was reported Thursday (Aug. 7).

In a report to the PCWA Board of Directors, Drought Project Manager Tony Firenzi said water use through July by PCWA treated water customers was down 17.5 percent from a year ago.

"We are confident that we're going to have adequate supplies to get through the remainder of this year," he said, "and that we should have better than expected carryover for next year."

Firenzi cautioned that the good conservation response needs to continue until ongoing drought conditions improve.  The water agency is asking all water users to reduce water usage by 10-20 percent.  Conservation on the part of customers and PCWA operations has been the key to surviving the drought.

Board Chairman Joshua Alpine and his fellow directors applauded staff's drought management and the positive public response.  "We appreciate very much that our customers are stepping up, saving water, and helping us all get through this situation," Alpine said.

  •  In other business, PCWA directors:
approved studies and plans for construction of a new 10-million-gallon water storage tank off Whitney Ranch Parkway in the City of Rocklin.  Director of Technical Services Brent Smith said the project would improve water storage capacity for the Whitney Ranch and Sunset Industrial areas.
  • heard a report from Brett Storey, a senior management analyst with Placer County, on a fuel reduction management program for lands within the PCWA Middle Fork American River Project watershed.
  • heard a staff update on the agency's concerns over the environmental impacts of the proposed Bay Delta Conservation Plan.  In comments submitted to state and federal officials, the agency says the plan does not adequately address impacts to upstream water demands and fisheries, fails to depict climate change, and does not include adequate funding or operational plans.
  • congratulated PCWA Human Resources Manager Shelley Langan, who is the 2014 recipient of the Stephen E. Bemis Memorial Award, the top annual award presented to human resources professionals by the International Personnel Assessment Council.

The next meeting of the PCWA Board of Directors will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, at the PCWA Business Center, 144 Ferguson Road, in Auburn.  PCWA board meetings are open to the public.

Information on PCWA board meetings may be obtained through the Clerk to the Board at (530) 823-4850 or (800) 464-0030.   For drought updates and water conservation information, see www.pcwa.net.
