John Adams Academy Choirs Receive Top Honors at Golden Empire Music Festival
Choirs receive coveted "Unanimous Superior" rating
Sacramento, CA - On Saturday, March 17, 2018, John Adams Academy-Roseville's top choirs, Schola Cantorum and Virtus, performed for a panel of judges at the 63rd Annual Golden Empire Music Festival at California State University, Sacramento. The event sponsored by the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) brought together many junior high and high school choirs in the Sacramento area. Choirs were rated for their tone quality and pitch, technical accuracy, expression and musicianship, and professionalism on stage. Schola Cantorum received an average score of 91.6/100, the highest that choir has ever received. Virtus received an average score of 95/100, the highest any choir at John Adams Academy has ever received. With these scores, both choirs achieved the rare and coveted "Unanimous Superior" rating.
In speaking to the John Adams Academy choirs after their performances, the judges raved about the emotional impact of their singing and the maturity they showed in their presentations. Choral Director Greg Blankenbehler also expressed his admiration at the scholars' accomplishment. "I am so proud of both choirs. They were given very challenging music and they rose to the occasion to not only sing it technically correct, but also with a genuine feeling that moved their audiences. These scholars have so much to be proud of."
"I am honored to be able to share in this memorable experience and I am so happy we achieved such high recognition!" stated Sharon Phillips, a junior at John Adams Academy and member of Virtus. "The entire choir has put in so many hours of effort both in school and at home. I am so thankful for the opportunity to show the world the wonders that come from our amazing choir program under Mr. Blankenbehler!"
Schola Cantorum is an extra-curricular choir for 7th - 9th graders that meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Virtus choir is an advanced music class for 10th-12th graders that meets daily and performs often in academy and community events including the State Capitol.
