Gambatte!: Legacy of an Enduring Spirit in Roseville

Featuring the work of Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Paul Kitagaki, Jr.

Roseville, CA - On April 13 the national traveling exhibition, Gambatte! Legacy of an Enduring Spirit: Triumphing Over Adversity Japanese American WWII Incarceration Reflections Then and Now will open at Blue Line Arts for a limited 8-week show.

Curated by award winning Sacramento Bee photographer Paul Kitagaki Jr., the exhibition explores the lasting impact President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's 1942 Executive Order No. 9066 had on our nation and its citizens. This Executive Order led to the forced removal of almost 120,000 Japanese Americans to incarceration camps during World War II, most of whom were native-born American citizens.

The exhibit chronicles the legacy of Japanese Americans who persevered over their incarceration during World War II through a display of past and present images from an often-overlooked chapter of U.S. history.

Photographs in the exhibition include those taken by War Relocation Authority photographers - including Dorothea Lange and Tom Parker - juxtaposed with contemporary portraits of the same individuals or their descendants from Kitagaki, a Pulitzer Prize winner.

On Saturday, April 21, Kitagaki will make an Artist Talk presentation at 5 p.m. at Blue Line Arts. He is expected speak about his process of finding families after all these years later, taking inspiration from his own family's story.

"In the late 1970s, as I started on my path as a photographer, my uncle, Nobuo Kitagaki, an artist in San Francisco, told me that Dorothea Lange had photographed my grandparents, father and aunt in 1942 as they awaited a bus in Oakland, California to begin their journey into detention. Several years later, while looking through hundreds of Lange's photographs at the National Archives in Washington D.C., I found her original images of my family," Kitagaki said in a recent statement.

A meet the artist reception, 6-8:30 p.m. during downtown Roseville's Third Saturday Art Walk is planned for after the artist's talk.

The show runs through June 2. Tour, Talk, & Create educational tours specially prepared for Gambatte! Legacy of an Enduring Spirit, and designed for grades K - college, are available by contacting Blue Line Arts, 916-783-4117.
