The Roseville City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to adopt a resolution in support of the region’s efforts to promote clean energy technology while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The City is supporting the effort by the Partnership for Prosperity’s Clean Energy team, a consortium of business, government, and utility representatives, to promote and enhance the region’s clean energy businesses and entrepreneurs, while expanding the market for green technology. Roseville is the first city in the region to adopt the resolution. The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) Board of Directors unanimously adopted a similar resolution at their Dec. 14 meeting. “Roseville is uniquely positioned to be a primary location within the region for clean technology companies,” said Julia Burrows, Roseville’s Deputy City Manager and Economic Development Director. “We’ve partnered with the Renewable Energy Institute International to build a Renewable Energy Research Center, with available industrial land near the Research Center, excellent amenities, a well-educated workforce, and low cost, reliable utilities. We wholeheartedly support the region’s efforts to attract clean technology or what are known as ‘green collar’ jobs.” Kristine Mazzei, Valley Vision’s project coordinator of Partnership for Prosperity, said that the group’s goal is to have a Clean Energy team for every SACOG member, which encompasses six counties and 22 cities. “Having the region united behind clean technology will make our recruitment efforts stronger as we work to attract companies and investors from throughout the state, the country and internationally, “Mazzei said. The adopted resolution also includes formation of the Roseville Green Team, which will be comprised of representatives from every City department. The Green Team will inventory the City’s recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency, green waste, vehicle emission reduction and solar programs, and publish findings on the City web site. The Green Team will also look at and recommend best practices to reduce costs and emissions, while Roseville eventually launches an ongoing marketing campaign to brand itself as a place that’s both green-friendly and a magnet for this exciting new industry. “Roseville has a legacy of doing the right thing for our citizens and our environment and we have a responsibility to continue that. This will save taxpayer dollars, comply with state laws and ensure the City’s economic vitality by creating jobs in what’s sure to be a multi-billion dollar industry in California,” said Roseville Mayor Jim Gray. “We want our communities to be even healthier for future generations and this takes us another step closer.” For more information, visit the City of Roseville’s website at www.roseville.ca.us.
