The unemployment rate in the Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville MSA was 13.1 percent in January 2010, up from a revised 12.2 percent in December 2009, and above the year-ago estimate of 10.0 percent.

This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 13.2 percent for California and 10.6 percent for the nation during the same period. The unemployment rate was 13.3 percent in El Dorado County, 12.0 percent in Placer County, 13.1 percent in Sacramento County, and 14.8 percent in Yolo County.

Between December 2009 and January 2010, the total number of jobs located in the counties of El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo decreased by 4,400 to total 821,600 jobs.

  • Trade, transportation, and utilities seasonally declined by 4,200 jobs. Retail trade (down
3,400 jobs) accounted for the majority of the cutbacks.
  • Professional and business services lost 2,400 jobs, largely due to a decline in
administrative and support and waste management and remediation services (down
    2,100 jobs).
  • Construction decreased by 1,400 jobs. Specialty trade contractors (down 1,200 jobs)
accounted for the majority of the decrease.
  • On the upside, government gained 7,000 jobs. Local government (up 4,400 jobs), state
government (up 2,400 jobs), and federal government (up 200 jobs) accounted for the
    total gain.

Between January 2009 and January 2010, the total number of jobs in the region fell by 34,500
or 4.03 percent.

  • Construction lost 10,300 jobs, mostly in specialty trade contractors (down 7,500 jobs).
  • Professional and business services declined by 8,300 jobs, primarily due to losses in administrative and support and waste management and remediation services (down 4,100 jobs) and professional, scientific, and technical services (down 3,900 jobs).
  • On the upside, government gained 3,400 jobs, leading regional job growth over the past
year. Gains in local government (up 3,600 jobs) and federal government (up 300 jobs)
offset losses in state government (down 500 jobs).
