ROCKLIN - Sierra College will present a lecture by historian and author Jack Duncan entitled "Historic Highways of the Sierra Nevada" on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 7 p.m. The presentation is sponsored by the Sierra College Friends of the Library. Traveling over the Sierra Nevada has always been difficult from the days of wagon trains to the present. But, when the automobile entered the scene in the early 20th century, new challenges emerged and a fascinating history developed. In an illustrated lecture, Jack Duncan will examine the historic highways of the Sierra Nevada, including the Lincoln Highway, the Victory Highway, and Highway 40. Since the 1850s, Jack Duncan's family has had roots in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. A retired mechanical engineer, Jack has a lifelong interest and fascination with early California transportation. For several years he performed engineering analyses of worldwide facilities and equipment using aerial photographs and other data. From time to time he has performed land surveying on federal land and for private purposes from which maps were produced. Jack is the author of the books To Donner Pass from the Pacific (2003) and A Study of Cape Horn Construction on the Central Pacific Railroad, 1865-1866, (2005.) These books by Jack Duncan will be available for purchase at the lecture. For more information, call the Sierra College Friends of the Library at 916-660-7200.
